Femininity through Fashion

Femininity is "qualities or attributes regarded as characteristic of women." Society views being feminine as having the qualities of acting in a feminine way or being "girly." The societal norms were that men were supposed to wear "masculine clothing" such as suits  and women should wear dresses and skirts. Fashion has no gender, it allows you to navigate and express yourself. Don't let anything stop you from being who you are and who you want to be. It's important to not have people boxed in when exploring gender expression and identity. It's time to redefine what femininity means to you.

Fashion plays a significant part in femininity. It contributes opportunities for people to experiment and break those barriers. I believe that fashion is personal; it's something that no one can take from you. Women have started to reclaim their own definition of fashion. They dress upon what makes them feel bold, powerful, and alluring. It's about taking control over yourself and your identity on your own terms rather than what's defined. Some of the most influential and beautiful women have defied those boundaries of gender roles in fashion. From Grace Jones to Janelle Monáe and Tracee Ellis Ross, wore garments that would be considered menswear but instead these women and so many more have changed that narrative to women being able to rock any style. In 1981, the amazing Grace Jones wore a sophisticated suit at the Carre Theater in Amsterdam. Janelle Monáe and Tracee Ellis Ross have worn tailored suits at events and shows. These women have given themselves the space to explore their gender expression through representation of fashion. Today, now you have clothing stores where you'll see wide-leg pants, trousers, blazers, and other oversized garments that are for women. As the fashion industry grows, there needs to be an increase of accepting representation for all.
